Speaker Profiles

Brian Moore

Born in Birmingham to a single mother who later moved to Halifax, Brian played first for Yorkshire Club Old Crossleyans after attending a local school there. Whilst studying for his law degree at the University of Nottingham, he made his name as a rugby player at the Nottingham Club, won his first few caps for England and in 1989 toured with the British Lions in Australia where Finlay Calder’s Test Team, including Brian, won the Series, 2-1. Brian moved to London to train as a solictor, switched Clubs to Harlequins and played in all three Test matches on the next Lions Tour to New Zealand in 1993.

Brian enjoyed an outstanding International career, amassing a total of 64 caps up to 1995 – a record for an England hooker that has only just been overtaken (by 2003 World Cup winner Steve Thompson). Brian played in three World Cups in 1987, 1991 and 1995 and was also a member of Will Carling’s England team that won three Grand Slams, in 1991, 1992 and 1995. He was voted Rugby World Player of the Year in 1991.

Following his retirement from the game, Brian continued with his legal career but has since become a rather outspoken but nonetheless much acclaimed full-time sports journalist (with the Daily Telegraph) and BBC TV rugby commentator. In 2010, he released his autobiography entitled ‘Beware of the Dog’, that has since won two Literary Awards.

A seson ticket holder at Chelsea FC and a lifelong supporter of the Labour Party, Brian also enjoys a well-deserved reputation as one of the country’s very finest sporting raconteurs.

Gary Marshall

A third generation comedian, Gary is the son of the late great Jimmy Marshall who starred in the very popular Granada TV Show, “The Comedians”. After a two year spell as a Butlins Redcoat at Blackpool’s Metropole Hotel, he turned professional in 1987 and toured with various comedy shows, acting as Compere but occasionally contributing his own humour. Gary later toured with the legendary group, The Drifters who were appearing at many of the country’s premier venues.

Over the years he has accumulated a wealth of varied experience, from pantomime here in the UK to entertaining British Troops overseas in several different countries. With TV credits including Sky TV’s “Stand and Deliver” ,“The Comedians” and “The New Comedians”, Gary was honoured in 1999 with the award of Comedian of the Year.

The Doncaster-based performer is most at home at corporate business functions and in particular Sportsmens’ Dinners where he has worked alongside many of the country’s best known sporting celebrities. He is a very popular and extremely accomplished entertainer who is constantly in demand on the circuit.
