Speaker Profiles

Brian Moore

Born in Birmingham to a single mother who later moved to Halifax, Brian played first for Yorkshire Club Old Crossleyans after attending a local school there. Whilst studying for his law degree at the University of Nottingham, he made his name as a rugby player at the Nottingham Club, won his first few caps for England and in 1989 toured with the British Lions in Australia where Finlay Calder’s Test Team, including Brian, won the Series, 2-1. Brian moved to London to train as a solictor, switched Clubs to Harlequins and played in all three Test matches on the next Lions Tour to New Zealand in 1993.

Brian enjoyed an outstanding International career, amassing a total of 64 caps up to 1995 – a record for an England hooker that has only just been overtaken (by 2003 World Cup winner Steve Thompson). Brian played in three World Cups in 1987, 1991 and 1995 and was also a member of Will Carling’s England team that won three Grand Slams, in 1991, 1992 and 1995. He was voted Rugby World Player of the Year in 1991.

Following his retirement from the game, Brian continued with his legal career but has since become a rather outspoken but nonetheless much acclaimed full-time sports journalist (with the Daily Telegraph) and BBC TV rugby commentator. In 2010 he released his autobiography, ‘Beware of the Dog’, that has since won two Literary Awards.

A seson ticket holder at Chelsea FC and a lifelong supporter of the Labour Party, Brian also enjoys a well-deserved reputation as one of the country’s very finest sporting raconteurs.

Paddy Lennox

An Ireland-born comedian and actor, Paddy first burst onto the stage as a stand-up in 2001 and although his career was then interrupted by a request to perform in a couple of comedies at the Shakespeare Globe Theatre and then film some commercials abroad, he returned home to continue with his new passion.

He has been described as an engaging and extremely likeable entertainer with an ability to combine his observational routines with topical material. A very versatile performer, Paddy has already amassed some impressive theatre, film and TV credits as an actor. Indeed, as an accomplished comic performer, he has had some flattering reviews in many Ray Cooney farces. He has also voiced-over and appeared in numerous commercials.

Consequently, Paddy is very much in demand.
