Speaker Profiles
Brian Moore
Born in Birmingham to a single mother who later moved to Halifax, Brian played first for Yorkshire Club Old Crossleyans after attending a local school there. Whilst studying for his law degree at the University of Nottingham, he made his name as a rugby player at the Nottingham Club, won his first few caps for England and in 1989 toured with the British Lions in Australia where Finlay Calder’s Test Team, including Brian, won the Series, 2-1. Brian moved to London to train as a solictor, switched Clubs to Harlequins and played in all three Test matches on the next Lions Tour to New Zealand in 1993.
Brian enjoyed an outstanding International career, amassing a total of 64 caps up to 1995 – a record for an England hooker that has only just been overtaken (by 2003 World Cup winner Steve Thompson). Brian played in three World Cups in 1987, 1991 and 1995 and was also a member of Will Carling’s England team that won three Grand Slams, in 1991, 1992 and 1995. He was voted Rugby World Player of the Year in 1991.
Following his retirement from the game, Brian continued with his legal career but has since become a rather outspoken but nonetheless much acclaimed full-time sports journalist (with the Daily Telegraph) and BBC TV rugby commentator. In 2010 he released his autobiography, ‘Beware of the Dog’, that has since won two Literary Awards.
A seson ticket holder at Chelsea FC and a lifelong supporter of the Labour Party, Brian also enjoys a well-deserved reputation as one of the country’s very finest sporting raconteurs.
John Stiles
John will be forever saddled with the inevitable burden of being the son of a famous father. He was born two years before Nobby Stiles MBE became a national football hero as a member of England’s victorious World Cup winning Team in 1966. John is also the nephew of Leeds United and Republic of Ireland legend, Johnny Giles.
Born in Manchester, John followed his father into professional football, making over 150 appearances in the Football League for Leeds United and Doncaster Rovers over a five year period. When his career ended he started his own insurance business and later moved into the football agency industry where his experience included a spell with the management company that looked after the affairs of the Spice Girls.
John eventually began working as an after-dinner speaker and Master of Ceremonies. This career path took him into the world of comedy where he has since established himself as one of the most popular and entertaining comedians on the circuit. With his unique style and delivery, combining anecdotes with some very amusing impressions, John is very much sought after, having worked alongside most of the country’s best known sporting celebrities.
